EPA kicks off 2011 Game Day Challenge

As colleges and fans across the country ramp up for another football season, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is launching a parallel competition to see which school can reduce, reuse and recycle the most waste.

The Game Day Challenge [1] competition — which is an initiative of the EPA's WasteWise [2] program — is open to any college or university in the U.S. that has a football team. Each participating school will be challenged to design a waste reduction plan for one 2011 regular-season home football game that involves recovering paper, beverage containers and cardboard, along with collecting food for donation or composting. The results of each plan will be used to determine winners in seven categories. Last year, more than 75 participating schools kept 500,000 pounds of waste out of landfills.
