Packaging company Placon has unveiled a line of recycled PET thermoformed food containers. Made with "curbside collected plastic bottles and thermoforms containing up to 100 percent post-consumer content," the clear containers come in eight different sizes and are able to store fresh, dry, cold or hot foods.

Staff at Everett Community College in Washington teamed up to build a campus greenhouse using 1,500 used 2-liter plastic bottles of soda. With assistance from Waste Management and Safeway Bottling, the group constructed greenhouse walls with the plastic from the bottles. The greenhouse will be utilized by the Seattle-area college's early-learning center to encourage children to think about sustainability in unique ways.

SPI: The Plastics Industry Trade Association says first quarter shipments of plastics machinery totaled $300.5 million. Up about 11 percent compared with first quarter numbers in 2013, the figures for 2014 corresponds with strong quarterly showings from the larger industrial equipment shipment category.
