Scrap plastic exports end 2013 down

Exports were down for all different types of scrap plastics in 2013 — the year that will be remembered for the effects of China's Operation Green Fence.

The month-to-month rebound of recovered plastic exports ended in December, which saw a sharp 9.4 percent decrease from November 2013 levels, with 358.13 million pounds exported in December 2013. When matched against December 2012 levels, the volume of plastic scrap exports was also down, by 4.3 percent.

The weighted price of recovered plastic exports in December, at 19.49 cents per pound, was down as well, by 2.6 percent from its November 2013 standing. When compared with its year-over-year (YOY) level, the price was flat, up by 0.4 percent.

The story of YOY for volumes of exported recovered plastic for full year of 2013 was still one of strong declines. Through all of 2013, at 4.21 billion pounds, the volume of recovered plastics exported was down 5.0 percent from its 2012 year-to-date (YTD) figure. And, at 20.40 cents per pound, the average price through all of 2013 was down 3.1 percent from its standing through all of 2012.
