Scrap plastic exports down through October

The story of declining exports of scrap plastic in 2013 continued, though October export figures were a bit rosier than month-previous levels.

At 395.58 million pounds, the volume of plastic scrap exported in October 2013 saw a 15.6 percent increase from its September 2013 level. When matched against October 2012 levels, however, the volume of plastics scrap exports was still down by 1.4 percent.

The weighted price of recovered plastic exports in October, at 21.84 cents per pound, was up as well, by 10.9 percent from its September 2013 standing. When compared with its year-over-year (YOY) level, the price was also up, by 7.5 percent.

The story of YOY for volumes of exported recovered plastic for 2013 was still one of strong declines. Through the first 10 months of 2013, at 3.46 billion pounds, the volume of recovered plastics exported was down 6.3 percent from its 2012 year-to-date (YTD) figure. And, at 20.53 cents per pound, the average price through the first 10 months of 2013 was down 3.6 percent from its standing through October 2012.
