As we get caught up on export data delayed from the fall 2013 government shutdown, the export of all scrap materials continued to see declines through the first three quarters of 2013.

At 341.10 million pounds, the volume of plastic scrap exported in September 2013 saw a 3.4 percent decrease from its August 2013 level. When matched against September 2012 levels, the volume of exports was down, as well, by 7.5 percent.

The weighted price of recovered plastic exports in September, at 19.70 cents per pound, declined 6.0 percent from its August 2013 standing. When compared to its year-over-year (YOY) level, the price was down by a steep 11.3 percent.

The YOY story for volumes of exported recovered plastics in 2013 continued to be one of strong declines across all resins. Through the first three quarters of 2013, at 3.06 billion pounds, the volume of recovered plastics exported was down 6.9 percent from its 2012 year-to-date (YTD) figure. And, at 20.37 cents per pound, the average price through Q3 of 2013 was down 4.9 percent from its standing through the same period in 2012.

As for other exported materials, recovered paper exports through Q3 2013 were 14.10 million metric tons, a 4.3 percent YOY drop from the first three quarters of 2012. At $166 per metric ton, the weighted average price of exported recovered paper through September was also down 2.4 percent when compared to its mark through Q3 2012.

Regarding ferrous scrap, the 14.36 million metric tons exported through the first three quarters of 2013 resulted in a 15.2 percent YOY decrease. Too, at $411 per metric ton, the weighted average price of exported ferrous scrap was down by 8.1 percent.

Lastly, the 3.04 billion pounds of aluminum scrap exported through September 2013 equated to a 12.1 percent YOY decrease from Q3 2012. However, at 80 cents per pound, the average price of exported aluminum scrap through September 2013 was up slightly 2.5 percent YOY.
