Casella sees recycling sales slide

By Editorial Staff, Resource Recycling

Casella Waste Systems, the publicly-traded waste management and recycling company, recorded a loss in its 2013 fiscal year, due in part to weaker recycling sales.

CWS had revenues of $455 million in the year ended April 30, 2013, down 2.7 percent. The firm said this fall in revenues was partially due to lower recycling commodity pricing. The company had recycling sales of $39 million, down 18 percent from the results in the 2012 fiscal year. This was one reason CWS recorded a loss of $54 million in 2013.

Company executives do not predict much improvement in recycling markets, saying the firm is likely to see recycling sales off 2.0 to 3.5 percent in the 2014 period.
