Japan relies on energy recovery to handle waste plastics

By Editorial Staff, Resource Recycling

Data from the Plastic Waste Management Institute shows that 1.58 billion pounds of the plastics consumed by Japanese residents are mechanically recycled each year.

This represents just 15 percent of domestic plastics generation. Only eight percent of domestic plastics are landfilled, and the remainder — 77 percent or 8.5 billion pounds annually — are sent to energy recovery or incineration plants. The most common use is in incineration plants with power generation (44 percent of plastics generation, or 4.9 billion pounds per year).
