T-Mobile commits to refurbishment

The U.S. division of wireless carrier T-Mobile has joined the Device Renewal Forum, making it the second mobile service provider to throw its support behind higher standards for refurbished phones and internet devices.
The organization, which launched in February 2012, has created a framework for best-practices in refurbishing and reselling second-hand mobile devices and recently developed specific testing and certification procedures for refurbished phones and mobile devices. Areas of focus for the new standards include testing the functionality of hardware, securely wiping data on devices, verification of device IDs to guard against theft, optimization of the device software and operating system, as well as other factors.
"With more than 33 million customers, T-Mobile USA will play an important role in educating U.S. mobile users about the environmental and economic benefits of device renewal," said DRF chairman Perry LaForge in a statement. "We look forward to working with T-Mobile USA's leadership to preserve the environment and double the market for renewed mobile devices over the next five years."
T-Mobile, along with Sprint, are thus far the only two wireless carriers to sign-on to the coalition, with no word yet from market leaders AT&T or Verizon. Other partners include ReCellular, Valutech Outsourcing LLC, Brightstar Corp., the CDMA Development Group, eRecyclingCorps, ModusLink Global Solutions and a handful of other partners.
